SUDAN ARCHIVES CONFESSIONS

Sudan Archives writes, plays and produces her own music, which features her stunning R&B influenced vocals, Sudanese inspired fiddle playing as well as her experimental electronic production. 'Confessions' is the first single from her upcoming EP. It addresses personal struggle surrounding religion, and the strength that she now possesses. The introduction is dramatic, with layered, elastic violins and a slow bass drum, beating like a heart. In the verse, broken, electronic beats and percussion come in, along with vibrating sub bass and a more melodic violin part. Sudan Archives' vocals are off-beat and succinct, sitting on top of the staccato stabs and glides of the violin. The harmonies in the pre-chorus are gospel-like in their compact and luxuriant form, as she explains, "There is a place that I call home, but it's not where I am welcome, and if I saw all the angels, why is my presence so painful?". Fuzzy bass lifts the chorus as she sings "Confessions are falling down, down". The song surprisingly goes into a more experimental trap/electronic section, where the vocals are softer and the violins are more effected, swirling like psychedelic patterns. Sudan Archives style is so very unique, drawing inspiration from familiar and distant sources to create her powerful statue of work. -Ellie Rose-Davies
